High Precision Diamond Grinding
If as-fired tolerances are not sufficient, where perhaps a molded part's dimensions aren't accurate enough to meet the print, grinding to more exacting tolerances using diamond impregnated tooling is done. Ceramco has a very capable grinding department equipped with CNC grinding machines and experienced machine operators that produce world-class results. We grind all the materials we make and more, including quartz glass.
An advantage we have is the ability to make our own grind blanks, or parts that are intended to go through the grinding process due to the technical requirements. Near-net shaped parts have most of the dimensions made from molding and then the critical-to-function features, perhaps a diameter or flatness or length, all get ground to perfection. Having complete control of the blanks ensures supply and gives us versatility.2
Maybe only a few prototypes are needed? Sometimes it makes more sense to just grind a part complete instead of making a molding tool. When time is tight and tooling isn't an option, a grinding-only solution may be possible.3
For the technical audience:
Our grinding abilities primarily depend on the shape and size of parts. We may be able to hold tighter tolerances on some parts than on others, and every part is unique. Our general grinding tolerance capabilities include:
