Ceramics in Aerospace

Strong and lightweight, technical ceramics are used in commercial and military landing gear technologies to isolate and insulate critical wires from damage.  The weight savings and durability afforded through the use of ceramic components is especially desirable on spacecraft, and  Ceramco supplies NASA and aerospace companies with crucial parts made of aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃) and zirconium oxide (ZrO₂).  Satellites also utilize ceramics, such as ion gas orientation thrusters, and the vented zirconia screws shown below.

Whether the ceramic parts are just used in our atmosphere, or in outer orbit, there are extreme conditions like pressure and temperature changes that non-ceramic materials cannot handle.
