Ceramic Solutions for
Corrosion & Wear
Corrosion, in the most
common use of the word, refers to the gradual destruction of a material, as a result of reaction
with its environment. Most often when we think of corrosion, we immediately think of the rusting
of metal:
electrochemical oxidation. However, the process of corrosion is not
limited to metals. Many polymers (plastics) corrode as well, via a
process called:
polymer degradation.
The ability of ceramics to
resist corrosion (in some cases entirely) is the primary reason they are the material of choice
for hostile environments. Ceramics (Ceramco’s aluminum
oxide and Ceramco’s zirconium dioxide) are
already oxides. As such, they are almost unaffected by the oxidation process leading to corrosion.
Ceramics possess exceptional resistance to strong acids and other chemicals.
Ceramic Parts Overcome Corrosive Wear
Overcoming the effect of corrosion on a part’s surface is another reason to consider Ceramco OEM ceramic parts. As metals and plastics corrode, their surfaces break down which can lead to pitting. Ceramco’s A998 (99.8% alumina) is fully dense, impervious, high wearing and non-corroding. OEM ceramic parts made of Ceramco’s A998 (99.8% alumina) can be machined and polished for leak-free and oxidation-proof dependability.
Parts subject to
impingement
attack (another form of corrosion) related to
cavitation damage, caused
by turbulence or impinging flow, resist this damaging effect when produced from
Ceramco’s A998 (99.8% alumina). In marine environments,
sea water impingement is mitigated with Ceramco custom, extremely hard, oxidation-proof, ceramic
parts. Chemical processing exposes critical parts to both impingement and oxidation. Again, the hard
and non-oxidizing properties of OEM and stock
ceramic parts made of Ceramco’s alumina and
zirconia formulations will significantly
reduce equipment failure and the associated maintenance costs when compared to either metals or
plastics.
Typical applications in which Ceramco OEM ceramic parts reduce or even eliminate corrosion include:
- Pumps and valves
- Valve seals
- Enclosures
Stock Formulations Versus Specialized Needs
Ceramco manufactures OEM ceramic parts. The very nature of our business and the diversity of the markets we serve demand the skill to meet their unique, highly specialized needs. Ceramco meets that challenge with our equally specialized and unique custom powder blends.
People Making it Happen
Corrosion occurs over time, leading to the eventual failure of a part. Business relationships can fail in the same way. At Ceramco we pride ourselves in being as tough as the OEM ceramic parts we make. Your investment in a relationship with Ceramco pays-off two-fold: consistent, on spec and on-time OEM ceramic parts and the respect and appreciation all customers deserve, regardless of the size of your order.
